Selves in Series: Autofiction and the Issue of Seriality

My doctoral project questions whether serial format can contribute to the autofictionality of a work. My corpus includes 3 autofictional series and an autofictional novel: Outline trilogy (2014–2018) by Rachel Cusk, Scenes from Provincial Life trilogy (1997–2009) by J. M. Coetzee, The Golden Notebook (1962) by Doris Lessing, and A Dance to the Music of Time series (1951–1975) by Anthony Powell. More specifically, I aim to discuss the impacts of seriality on the narrative structure and the production of self in autofictional texts as well as the cultural-historical conditions that serial autofiction is in dialogue with.
